(Nora Franglen)

My message to Liu Laoshi

I realized that I was so very fortunate in meeting Liu Laoshi many years ago. It happened when I went to an acupuncture seminar in Germany, and there was Liu Laoshi giving some courses. I was introduced to him through Long Mei, and I felt immediately that here was somebody that I could trust first of all. That's most important for me that I had a connection with, a deep connection. I was delighted that he invited me to China to talk about five element acupuncture. That was first of all in Nanning and from then on for the next ten twelve years we have been very close, even though we've been a long way away from each other and only see each other every once or twice a year. But we've been very close in our understanding of what traditional Chinese medicine is about and how very profound it is, very deep it is, and how very important it is for the modern world. I had a saying that I’d like to say to everybody which was that five element acupuncture which is a kind of acupuncture that I practice is an ancient form of healing for a modern world. It is most appropriate for all the troubles we have in the modern world, particularly now. And Liu Laoshi understood that very quickly. I was amazed at how quickly he realized that what I was talking about, which was at that time something he probably didn't think about very much, was something that he believed at a very deep level inside himself. And since then, since the start of my first seminar in Nanning all those years ago, many times I've come to China, he has encouraged me to develop my ideas just spread them as far as possible around China and made me feel that the second half of my acupuncture life has been such a rewarding one. Without these visits to China, without feeling that I was helping the Chinese acupuncturist understand this incredible, beautiful form of medicine, I think my life would not have been as rewarding as it has been.

I have enjoyed it so much associating with Liu Laoshi and admiring so much how much he has understood what I'm doing. When I hear him talk, it's a little bit as if I hear my own master JR Worsley who died some time ago but was a great influence on me, while I hear my own master talking, as if the hands across the ocean from China to England to America round the world are holding together and are grasping each other and are helping each other in this very difficult time. This is a particularly difficult time around the world because of COVID, and that also because there are enormous challenges. The environmental challenges are enormous. Financial challenges are enormous. And people find it very difficult to find enough support to cope with these challenges. One of the things I love about five element acupuncture and which Liu Laoshi understood so very quickly and so very deeply is that it helps us at the deepest levels of our life which is in our spirit, in our Shen. It somehow has the ability to touch through the body because we need to use the needle of course through the body to touch the deepest parts of us. In this very difficult time, it is one of the most appropriate forms of therapy, not just medicine, of all kinds of therapy which can be helpful to everybody that comes towards us.

I really look forward to seeing all of you again and to meeting Liu Laoshi again at our next seminar, because I miss seeing him and I miss seeing everybody else. I think you are all very lucky to have such a very remarkable master in your midst now. And he has always said it would be good if we could find a JR Worsley, a master of five element acupuncture in China and I'm sure there is somebody out there who will become the next master of five element acupuncture. And I thank Liu Laoshi from my heart for all that he has done to encourage my work over there with you. Thank you.
